Try Magic DVD Ripper:
http://www.magicdvdripper.com/

I think it's a trial, but it worked good for me. And its a download.

As Cisco mentioned, doom9 is a great place to start. They have detailed guides for ripping and encoding. Start there, particularly if you want to learn a bit about the finer details of dvd video and encoding.

And if you want free doom9 has a good guide on Auto Gordian Knot you might want to check out. Or if you have a lot of free disk space you can just use DVD Decrypter and just play the VOBs from you HD. Either way you are going to need dvd decrypter. It's free, works flawlessly, and is simple to use, but because of it's questionable legality, I can't tell you where to get it. Doom9 has a link though.

I only have two DVDs, so I just ripped them to ISOs, which hopefully entails a perfect copy. (And Totem can play DVD images!) I don’t know the specifics in Windows, but Ubuntu required me to install libdvdcss2, because archiving my own DVDs that I bought with my own money for my sole consumption is such a crime.

kk, is there a way to do this and put them on my ipod?

And also, could i (hypothetically of course) rent a DVD from my local library, rip the movie off it, then return it without any harm?

First you rip a dvd..than download " any video converter" ( search that in google )
Than you import the ripped dvd to any video converter than choose the ipod
video format setting..wait for it to convert than add it to itunes and there you go
-if you need anymore info message me

Yes, but I don’t think that’s legal. Your evil deed would haunt you for the rest of your life.

How would that be possible? DVD ripping merely reads the DVD – just as if you were playing it, only at a faster rate.

There is no way the library can scan the dvd to know that you ripped it. DVDs (with the exception of DVD-RW discs, which are never used commercially) are read only media. It's not possible for the disc to retain any information that wasn't put there at the factory. It's simply not possible for the disc to retain any information about who did what with it.

And the VHS thing? yeah, you can get around that with a piece of tape. Did it all the time when I was younger. All that's different from a commercial VHS cassette and a blank one is a tab which isn't there on a commercial cassette. Tape over the space where the tab would be and it's recordable again.

nm, I misunderstood the VHS thing. What you are talking about is macrovision, a precursor of sorts to the CSS found on dvds.

And secondly I'm not saying it ain't illegal (darn DMCA treading all over fair use), but there is no way to know if you just ripped a dvd, unless you do something stupid like sell\share it.

So yeah, don't be stupid and put your dvds on bit torrent, or start selling burns out of you car trunk. Also just say no to drugs tongue.gif ... seriously though, don't be an idiot. Personal copies should be covered under fair use (and despite the circumvention clause in the DMCA I think a precedent may have already been set providing a fair use exclusion, but I'm not up to date on these cases).

So can i put them on my ipod?

There's a video i've got right now called "Highquality.avi" It's a video of this guild killing the final boss in the most recent expansion (TBC). I've been trying to convert it but i can't. It needs to be an MPEG4 but it's an AVI. I found one program that would do it but it will only do 5 minutes of it unless i buy the whole thing. Is there any free software that will do this?

If I remember correctly pretty much all you need to do is re-encode the video to mp4 with either MPREG-4 or H.264. The ipod does have a limited resolution (640x480), but I think it can scale down.

Still a quick glance at sourceforge turns up the following free programs:

iPod Video Encoder
mvPod

I think both are just front-ends for FFMPEG though (which is also free), which you'll find at the core of most free encoder programs (because it's awesome). FFMPEG is command line though, so it's not the easiest thing to use without a good frontend.
